plussixfive had the opportunity to talk to the people behind local streetwear label SMG and find out more about the brand and their influences and inspirations. They also shed some light on their SMUDGEstore and different brands/labels that they’re stocking. Jump for the full interview.
We know about SMUDGEstore as well as the label SMG. Do differentiate the two entities for the readers who aren’t too sure what the two are about.
SMG: SMUDGEstore is the flagship store and SMG is a label. They share the same concept and main liner: “Still moving under gun fire.” SMUDGEstore is an extension to serve as a base that houses brands like SMG and Precious, along with other labels such as Devilock, Brook Avenue, Greedy Genius, Rebel Scholar and Subcrew.
So does SMG = SMUDGE?
SMG: It all started with the concept of “Still Moving UnDer Gun firE”, in short, SMUDGE. The label holds the essence to the concept, thus SMG. The word “Smudge” also takes on a special meaning for the brand as it reminds us that our beliefs and philosophies defines as well as “smudges” our life canvas. Despite adversaries in life, we should still move on, under the constant gunfire of modern society.
What does SMG stand for? (you can interpret this in any way that you want)
SMG: Still Moving UnDer Gun firE.
Tell us about the label SMG, where and what direction will it be heading in over the next 3 years or so?
SMG: SMG is a lifestyle label. While its main focus is men’s wear, it also embraces ‘street culture’. In other words, it will carry products that caters to the street culture community around the world. We are hoping to establish more selling outlets in the next 3 years mainly around Asia like Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bejing and Kuala Lumpur. Other countries on the list include Australia, Canada, USA and Tokyo.
What does SMG want to say to the world by way of their clothes?
SMG: SMG clothing holds the attitude of “Still Moving Under Gunfire”. The overall concept and brand philosophy stems from the latent inner strength within all individuals as they face their daily wars in life. The battlefields within our individual lives may be different, but the inner strength will always prevail over any adversity as long as you believe and never ever give up or give in. The brands aesthetics embodies a military style to depict the audience as a SOLDIER in their War. We believe the brand philosophy will recruit its own band of SOLDIERS.
What influences the aesthetics of the SMG label?
SMG: SMG is a deep expression of beliefs and life experiences of the brand’s founder JJ Lin’s and his friends. SMG’s brand attitude is inspired by the metaphoric soldiers or warriors who will die fighting for what they believe in. The core value of any warrior is loyalty and honour, their strength to move on in the face of adversities could all be applied to present times. As a singer, JJ travels to many places and what he learnt and experienced reinforces the belief of SMG, and that provided the driving force to materialise the concept into a brand. The products’ design and art are driven by this attitude and depicted with a mix of elements from pop culture, historical reflections, biblical/ historical references and current affairs.
What can Singaporeans (and the rest of the world) look forward to seeing from SMG in the coming months?
SMG: As we are replying to this interview, we are preparing to bring the official website to the next level by opening up its doors for online sales.
Also, our wave of mesh caps are already on the way, and we are expanding our product range to include shirts, jackets, hoodies and jeans. We are also currently preparing for a major party that will be held on the second week of October 09. Look out for high profile crossovers. More news about the event soon.
Let’s talk about the SMUDGEstore. What are products and brands are stocked in SMUDGEstore?
SMG: SMG, Precious, Devilock, Brook Avenue, Greedy Genius, Rebel Scholar and Subcrew.
We have a full range of products ranging from tees, shirts, caps, jeans, shoes, and other accessories.
Are these other brands/products meant to support your brand, through similar aesthetic appearances, etc?
SMG: The brands that SMUDGEstore carries are very strong and established with huge followings. Having them in the store is a bonus to us of course. At the same time, we are also honoured to be working with them in crossover projects.
How troublesome/challenging is it to run a store?
SMG: It is not easy to run a retail store in Singapore, but in order to create a truly respectable brand that has a strong foundation and reputation, we have to accept the challenge that is set before us. SMUDGEstore shares similar problems that retailers in Singapore faces.
Are we going to see an expansion of the SMUDGE store anytime soon (via increasing the number of labels carried, store space, etc)?
SMG: We are constantly on the lookout for good brands that are suitable for our target customers. At present, we are still looking for suitable premises around Asia.
And lastly, 5 reasons why someone will wear a SMG tee?
1) Original and Real!
2) Dope aethetics and designs
3) Limited print runs for all products
4) Design director Jaz Loh for SMG is the master behind some of the more noted crossovers and street labels. He is the name behind brands like Color (HKG/ Tokyo), Edwin Jeans (TWN) and is responsible for the recent Machi X Devilock crossover. He has also worked with iconic figures such as the legendary Phase2 (NYC), Crash (NYC), Jakuan 360(NYC), DJ Tommy (H.K.), MC Yan (H.K), LMF (H.K), Subcrew (H.K), Machi (TPE), Freak of Nature (L.A), Devilock (JPN) and the previous local brand Scum (SIN/ TPE). His work spans more than just within the realm of ‘street wear’ and he art directs for celebrities and even won awards for best C.D art direction. He is often invited to participate in artshows and features in the likes of : his own solo show at the Singapore Esplanade collaborating with the respected Dj Tommy, Adidas Originals Art show in Taipei, Nike Beijing’s AF1 anniversary show 2007, No Comply 2008 (AUS) and the 1st installment of tiger beer’s translate (invitation by IdN.)

SMUDGE (SMG) is the latest streetwear label to hit the shores of Singapore. The brand recognizes the stressful moments and volatile nature of life and how one literally feels that he or she is “under gunfire” at times.
